The Credit/Housing Counselor, through one on one counseling sessions, will help clients establish common sense, workable financial plans which will help the client break down barriers that may be preventing them from reaching their goals. The Counselor will help clients gain insight into their individual credit, budgeting, and debt challenges.  The counselor will be expected to adhere to company policy, departmental procedures, data collection/reporting in addition to building upon the success of the program.

To fulfill these roles the counselor must have good interpersonal skills, be an effective problem solver, have a working knowledge of finances/credit and be able to convey suggestions/ideas in a constructive nonjudgmental and professional manner to clients, co-workers and the community.



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • 2 years related work experience in banking/lending/credit counseling, and/or human services is preferred but will train if necessary.


  • Interact effectively and professionally with clients, board members, creditors, and the community.
  • Ability to work on projects independently with strong personal organization
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills in various forms such as verbal, written, over the phone and in person.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, be detail oriented, enter/track data, etc.
  • Ability to show empathy and compassion.
  • Basic proficiency with calculator, keyboard, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of credit reporting, financial products, lending products and mortgages preferred
  • Willingness to be trained, ask questions, and be an effective team player


  • Interview clients, gather factual information, assess client’s financial needs and other appropriate data based on the individual client.
  • Determine recommended course of action and work with client to create and implement action plan to help assist them in resolving their financial situation.
  • Counsel clients on budgeting, credit, money management and achievable financial goals
  • Educate clients on credit report, credit ratings and protection laws.
  • Provide educational materials, resources and positive support to help client reach their goals.
