October is National RSVP Month

October 15, 2008

October is National RSVP month and gives us the chance to recognize this program offered locally through Center For Siouxland.  RSVP consists of a group of life long learners age 55 and older, willing to meet new people and to serve in situations where needs are met through volunteerism.  Through their experience and generous spirit, RSVP volunteers are models of caring for the people they serve.  By their example, they teach compassion, understanding, service and dedication.

Iowa has 22 RSVP programs that cover 49 of its 99 counties.  Through RSVP, Iowans over the age of 55 have an opportunity to connect and meet the needs of their communities, and participate in volunteer activities where they give of themselves to help others. RSVP volunteers continually learn, grow, have purpose, and have an opportunity to leave a legacy.

In 2007, 150 RSVP volunteers contributed over 12,000 hours of service to the people and agencies in Woodbury County. Individuals who benefit from the services of RSVP volunteers live independently, receive better health care, improve academic performance, are given friendship and guidance, have their basic needs met, increase nutritional needs, learn to read, live in a cleaner and safer community, learn to budget and save, feel loved and cared about, have their quality of life improved, and have hope for the future

RSVP volunteers are important to our program, to the agencies and individuals they serve, and to our community.  As we celebrate National RSVP month, please thank all RSVP members for finding the time in their busy lives to connect with children, peers, older adults and non-profit organizations through our program.

RSVP will help you find meaningful volunteer opportunities. It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to make a difference in someone’s life. For more information or how to become involved, please call Center For Siouxland at 712-252-1861, ext. 21.
