Phone Card Drive for Siouxland Troops A SuccessNovember 17, 2008Siouxland contributions helped raise $1,846.00 which is being used to purchase phone cards that will be placed into Care Packages for our local soldiers who are deployed overseas. The packages are being mailed in time for arrival by Christmas so that these Soldiers can call home and talk with family and friends.
Support Siouxland Soldiers partnered with Center For Siouxland’s RSVP-Volunteer Program to conduct the phone card drive. RSVP and Support Siouxland Soldiers worked at a concession stand during a Musketeer game as well as held a raffle during the games on Oct 24th and Nov 8th. RSVP is a federally funded non-profit program, sponsored by Center For Siouxland for over 25 years. RSVP helps individuals age 55 and older use their life experiences to help their communities. Currently, more than 130 RSVP volunteers dedicate their time, skills, and passion to make a positive change to our community. Support Siouxland Soldiers is a non-profit, grassroots, volunteer-run organization that started in the spring of 2007. Seven times a year SSS sponsors a care package event that allows the community to personalize individual boxes filled with necessities and goodies for our locally deployed men and women of the Armed Forces. Names and address of soldiers are received from military families within a 150 mile radius of Sioux City and every soldier is sent a boxed filled with items and letters of support from the community. Items for the care packages and the postage to send them is provided through T- shirt sales and donations that SSS receives from the community as a show of support for the sacrifices and distinguished efforts that our service members make. Approximately 100 care packages are sent out during each pack event in support of our soldiers and their families’ efforts to keep “Home” at the forefront of their soldier’s lives.
