Senior Programs Department Receives Foster Grandparent Program Grant

January 26, 2006

On January 26, 2006, the Senior Programs Department was awarded a $62,884.00 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. This funding will be used to implement a Foster Grandparent Program in Sioux City.

The Foster Grandparents will serve as mentors and tutors for elementary-aged children who need extra assistance developing and improving their reading and math skills. During the school year, the Foster Grandparent Program will partner with the Sioux City Community School District to place 14 Foster Grandparent volunteers in elementary schools throughout Sioux City. During the summer, the Foster Grandparent Program will partner with the Beyond the Bell Program, Bridges West Transitional Housing, and the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter to place the Foster Grandparent volunteers with children enrolled in these programs and shelters. The Foster Grandparent Program hopes to serve approximately 508 Sioux City children throughout the year.
